Brink Scholtz - Resident Director        

Brink completed a BA Honours degree in Drama and Psychology at Rhodes University and then worked in Scotland for three years, making theatre with learning-disabled adults. Brink joined the company in 2006 and went on to complete her Masters in Directing in 2007. As Resident Director, Brink works to further strengthen Ubom! through vigorous training, group dynamics, skills development and the creation of relevant, accessible works of the highest theatrical calibre.

Thami Baba - Performer

Thami was born and educated in Grahamstown and is a true-blues singer who loves to make music. Thami came out of the 2004 Ubom! theatre Skills Programme and went on to work for Ubom! in a number of capacities. She became a full-time performer/facilitator with the company in 2006 and continues to grow as a dynamic multi-skilled actor and workshop leader.

Luvuyo Yanta - Performer

Born and bred in Grahamstown, Luvuyo was educated at Nathaniel Nyaluza High School where his talent for drama was nurtured by his English teacher. As the most senior member of the company (having been a full-time performer with Ubom! since 2004), Luvuyo is a stalwart within the ensemble who continues to develop his skills as a performer and facilitaor.

Jaques de Silva - Performer

This comical and acrobatic performer first saw Ubom! at the Eastern Cape Schools Festival in 2003, and knew then that he wanted to be part of the team. Jaques believes that Ubom!'s work in the Eastern Cape is essential because it ensures that imaginations are stimulated. Imagination, he believes, is the key to success.

Jennifer Schneeberger - Performer

After completing her Honours in Drama at Rhodes in 2006, Jen was snapped up by Ubom! to be the company manager in 2007. Besides the multiplicity of skills she holds, including design, theatre management and stage management, Jen is also a talented actress and singer. Jen is now a performer with the company and brings a soulful voice and impassioned performance to the stage.

Sisonke Yafele - Performer

Sisonke is another Grahamstonian who hails from Nathaniel Nyaluza High School. Sisonke caught the Artistic Director's eye when he performed in the 2005 Makana Drama Develpment Festival. In 2006 he was cast as the lead in "Kiss My Boot" and has been a permanent company member ever since. Sisonke brings warmth, energy and huge talent to the Ubom! company.

Cassandra Hendricks - Performer

Cassi, a skilled performer and director, recently graduated from Rhodes with a BA Honours in Drama. She enjoys directing and performing in theatre events which make the audience both laugh and contemplate the relevance that theatre may hold for their own lives. Cassi constantly strives to enrich the lives of others, especially the disadvantaged youth of SA through theatre.







The vision of developing an arts industry in the Eastern Cape spurred Janet Buckland to create a diverse company with graduates from Rhodes university, Lovedale College and local community professionals. The mix of people always vibrates with energy as the individuals feed off of each other.

Janet Buckland - Artistic Director

Born in East London, Janet attended Rhodes University where she obtained a BA Honours (cum laude) in Drama and History, and a Higher Diploma in Education. In 1993, she became Director of Arts Education Projects at the Grahamstown Foundation. Janet's directing accomplishments have recieved national and international acclaim. She has won three Vita Awards for 'Best Production' and for 'Best Direction', as well as three Scotsman Fringe First Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2001 she was the recipient of the Eastern Cape Premier Award for Directing. Janet has been dedicated to arts development in the Eastern Cape since 1993.


Mike Mati - Company Administrator

Born in Port Elizabeth, Mike is the leader of the President's Award Gumboot Group, which has travelled the world to cities including Berlin and London. From 1996 - 2000 he worked for the President's Award Youth Empowerment Programme as the Grahamstown Area Manager. In 2006, Mike began working for Ubom! as the company administrator, and has been an invaluable part of the team since then. Mike dreams of developing his administrative and funding skills in the NGO world, and one day running a successful youth development programme in Grahamstown.
